Rutas Indigenas in Mesoamerica
Mesoamerican Ecotourism Alliance

We are extremely excited to offer this new category "Rutas Indigenas". These trips focus on the rich indigenous cultural history of the region with a mix of ancient and present day experiences. These tours will be led for the most part by our indigenous guides who will share their rich traditions and also open the doors for deeper insight into local cultures and customs throughout our itineraries.

From the spectacular Tikal, Copan and Palenque to a vast number of smaller sites, the legacy of the Maya makes Mesoamerica an amazing destination for archeology enthusiasts. What many people do not know is that there are over 7 million native Mayan speakers today speaking in more than 25 dialects! And this is only the Maya indigenous culture. Add to the rich Maya heritage the diverse groups of the Lenca, Garifuna, Pech, Moskito, Tawaka, Rama, Kuna, Emera, Wounaan, Ngobe-Bungle, Teribe, Bokota, & Bribri. Our Yucatan, Chiapas and Guatemala itineraries will be in the Maya region. Belize is a mix of Maya and Garifuna cultures. Honduras, Nicaragua & Panama have an incredible diversity of non-Maya indigenous cultures.

These itineraries will also include visiting spectacular natural areas but will also have indigenous components woven into the day-to-day activities. As with all our itineraries, but these in particular, your participation creates significant benefits to the indigenous communities visited.
